I found this fair-condition softcover at a local Goodwill thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy. Perhaps it'll introduce someone else to this intriguing series.

The concept: a shinigami (a kind of usher-of-souls or death-god - here it takes the monstrous form, rather than the more bishonen style of Descendants of Darkness) drops his mystical Death Note, which can cause the death of anyone whose name is inscribed in it. A young man finds the note and decides that he can think of a few people who deserve to be killed - but things aren't nearly that simple... [The TV Tropes entry for this series helped to get my attention; it seemed that whenever I browsed that site I'd come across examples from this series!]

Anyway, the series is simply wonderful - great characters, intricate plots, suspense, drama, touches of humor - really marvelous! And I recommend both the pair of live-action films based on the series, as well as the anime version, which I enjoyed thanks to Netflix {grin}.
