From the Booker Prize-winning, bestselling author of Remains of the Day comes this stunning work of soaring imagination.

Born in early-twentieth-century Shanghai, Banks was orphaned at the age of nine after the separate disappearances of his parents. Now, more than twenty years later, he is a celebrated figure in London society; yet the investigative expertise that has garnered him fame has done little to illuminate the circumstances of his parents' alleged kidnappings. Banks travels to the seething, labyrinthine city of his memory in hopes of solving the mystery of his own, painful past, only to find that war is ravaging Shanghai beyond recognition-and that his own recollections are proving as difficult to trust as the people around him.

Masterful, suspenseful and psychologically acute, When We Were Orphans offers a profound meditation on the shifting quality of memory, and the possibility of avenging one’s past.

Kaledonian kanava (engl.

The Caledonian Canal connects the Scottish east coast at Inverness with the west coast at Corpach near Fort William in Scotland. The canal was constructed in the early nineteenth century by Scottish engineer Thomas Telford, and is a sister canal of the Göta Canal in Sweden, also constructed by Telford.

My family had just enjoyed a lovely picnic on a remote beach next to Loch Ness, then went on to Fort Augustus. The rain kept the girls in the woolen shop, while my husband and I watched a sailboat come through the locks. I found this book wrapped in plastic on a stone bench next to the Caledonian Canals. I was so excited and returned a few days later to Savannah, GA with my treasure. I am a fiction writer, so this is truly wonderful to be part of.

I recently finished it while on another adventure in Ketchum, ID. While in the Salt Lake City Airport, I overheard a well spoken woman saying how much she loved to read. So, instead of leaving it, I handed it to her and explained what this was all about. She was very cool to take it and said she was on her way to Las Vegas, NV.

The book was complex and truly beautiful. I enjoyed it so much, I have ordered another book by this brilliant writer, Kazoo Ishiguro. I hope this book travels around the world and is enjoyed by many. Happy reading my friends!
