A novel about wrenching sorrow, and debilitating compromises. Merry and Lulu are at home when their father murders their mother. Lulu, being older is sent to run for the neighbors, when she comes back, her mother is dead, her father has also tried to kill her 5 year old sister, and made a shallow attempt at suicide.
This is their story; trying to go on from that dark point, and not just be the murderer's daughters. Each sister tries a different path. Lulu attains a life where she thinks nothing can reach her, and Merry skims along, allowing nothing to matter to her. Eventually, walls break down into an uneasy peace with their past.
