This is a good book, but it is not a novel in the traditional sense. It is not the least bit plot-driven; rather, it is composed of a series of vignettes (somewhat autobiographical in nature, I assume) that form almost prose poems. Each vignette is short and may or may not tie in directly with the others in the book. The only real thread is the narrator, Esperanza, who is recounting her experiences growing up in a Latino neighborhood in Chicago. I especially enjoyed the lyrical and imaginative language that Cisneros employs.
