This book was a Booker Prize winner in 1974, and I'm reading it as part of my Booker Prize project. (Gordimer was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1991.) For reviews of Gordimer's work, see Per Wastberg's excellent essay at the Nobel Prize site, Nadine Gordimer and the South African Experience

I'm mailing this book to inkognitoh as a trade for Pat Barker's The Ghost Road. We Booker compulsives need to stick together :^). Best wishes from British Columbia, Canada!

I'm thrilled to be reading this book, thanks for the opportunity. I cannot wait to sink my teeth into Mehring and his rebellious 'possessions' as they rise up against him. Thanks so much for agreeing to this trade goatgrrl - your friend in Booker insanity :)

7 out of 10

I found the style of this book difficult to stick with. The lovely dreamy inner dialogue of the central character seguing into conversation and memoir without break left my mind wandering off the plot of the book and on to other things. The style seemed to tap the subconcious of the central character and by default, activated mine as well. I did enjoy the beautiful quality of the writing, especially the conversational elements between the black 'farm hands' and the white property owner but found the book as a whole quite difficult to engage with.

I admit to being seriously lost as to what was going plotwise and who events involved or were happening to at some points in this story.
