Toss sent me a bagful of paperbacks and this one was in it. I've already got a Finnish translation in my shelf waiting to be read, so I think this one is free to go. It is reserved for now.

The blurb:
Carrying a reputation for arrogance as well as brilliant crime solving, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn now heads the two-man Special Investigations Office of the Navajo Tribal Police. But a shaky new partnership with Officer Jim Chee is only three days old when a routine surveillance leads to a complex tale of murder and Indian legend.
He was supposed to be watching a runaway schoolboy. Then somewhere in the crowd at Tano Pueblo's tribal celebrations, Jim Chee lost the truant – and a man lost his life. A bad start: but could there also be a link between this murder and a seemingly unconnected murder forty miles away? Crossing the boundaries between police work and Indian allegiance, Joe Leaphorn joins Chee on the trail of those ruthless enough to kill – simply for the chance of selling their heritage to the highest bidder …
'The best, and certainly most unusual, mystery novels of the last few decades'
The New York Times
'Tony Hillerman's books are unique and special'
Sunday Telegraph
'As ever, in Tony Hillerman's pure and wonderful series of navajo mysteries, the texture seems impossibly rich … But as ever, we have Chee and leaphorn to guide us; two of the most original and appealing characters in the history of crime fiction'
– Pete Davies in the Independent
