I’ve read the Finnish translation a few times, I think, and liked it very much. I don’t think I’ll need to read this copy.

On its publication in 1910 Howards End was instantly and widely recognized as a classic. ʼThe word Forsterian is demanded,ʼ wrote one reviewer. Another adjudged its author ʼlikely to be one of our gloriesʼ, while a third considered that ʼif he never writes another line, his niche will be secureʼ. These forecasts have been justly amplified.
So too, to an unnerving extent, have been many of the warnings voiced in Howards End: about the sprawling ʼred rustʼ of London, about the decay of rooted, rural values, about ʼthe shallow makeshift note that is so often heard in the modern dwelling-placeʼ, about the supremacy of money, about the growing tyranny (even then) of the motor-car. It has thus become more relevant than ever as a statement of humane, civilized values, while its subtle characterization, its blend of irony and lyricism, its humour, and its wealth of unobtrusive symbols, make it one of the great English novels.
This edition includes Forsterʼs account of his childhood home (the model for Howards End). And an introduction and notes by Oliver Stallybrass.

About the author:
Edward Morgan Forster was born in London in 1879, attended Tonbridge School as a day boy, and went on to Kingʼs College, Cambridge, in 1897. With Kingʼs he had a lifelong connection and was elected to an Honorary Fellowship in 1946. He had honorary degrees conferred on him by many universities. He used to declare that his life as a whole had not been dramatic, and he was unfailingly modest about his achievements. Interviewed by B.B.C. on his eightieth birthday, he said: ʼI have not written as much as Iʼd like to . . . I write for two reasons: partly to make money and partly to win the respect of people whom I respect . . . I had better add that I am quite sure I am not a great novelist.ʼ Eminent critics and the general public have judged otherwise; in Penguins alone A passage to India has sold well over a million copies.
In addiotion to six famous novels and two collections of short stories (published in Penguins), E. M. Forster published various other works; they include two biographies, two books about Alexandria, the result of his sojourn there in the First World War when he was with the Red Cross, and, with Eric Crozier, the libretto for Brittenʼs opera Billy Budd. He died in June 1970.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

Tällä vapautuksella osallistun ainakin Chanian Vapautusten vuoteen ja pippiksen Turistivapautuksiin. Lisää selittelen myöhemmin. Vapautuspaikka lienee jossain Taidemuseon pihamaalla, penkillä tai portailla.
Lisäys 3.6.16. Taidemuseo valikoitui Turistivapautus-paikaksi rakennuksensa takia. Minä pidän siitä, että vanhoille rakennuksille keksitään alkuperäisen toiminnan loputtua järkevää uusiokäyttöä, ja Taidemuseon kohdalla niin on aikanaan tehty. C. L. Engel suunnitteli talon v. 1838 kruunun viljamakasiinin, jonka Hilja Gestrin sitten 1931 muokkasi taidemuseoksi. Ajatus taidemuseon perustamisesta kaupunkiin oli syntynyt jo 1920-luvun alkupuolella, ja pian keksittiin että vuosikymmeniä käyttämättömänä olleesta viljamakasiinistahan sellainen saataisiin. Eivät Tampereenkaan päättäjät aina ole tyhmyyksiä tehneet.
