"Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan...

But for Cath, being a fan is her life—and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words... And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?"

My only problem with this book was that I couldn't relate to Cath that much and she reminds me of my roommate, who loved this book. Eleanor & Park is my favorite Rainbow Rowell novel, but this is a close second.

This is the story of 18 year old Cath’s freshman year at collage. She is an identical twin, who is forced to discover her own identity, in large part by her sister Wren casting her adrift before they get there (by refusing to room with her). We follow her interesting and often surprising journey. She has the usual settling in to a new life troubles, made worse by her sister not just abandoning her, but appearing to thrive with the separation. Add to the mix a little roommate friction, some serious family drama, intensive fan fiction writing, discovery of boys and a general fear of life to contend with. Then top it off with falling in love for the first time! This book is all about the transition from child to adult and the author handles it so well. She has crafted a gorgeous cast, that you really care about. I could identify a lot of myself in both Cath and Reagan (who I’d so want for a best friend). There is magic in these here pages - and not just the Simon & Baz ones either! One of my best bits is the Emergency Kanye Party (chapter 11). And the Dinning Room Observations!! Love the insights into the book and the author from the interview with author at the end and the art works on both sides of the covers. I really hope for a sequel. Guess the only thing to do now is get ‘Carry On’ to read!

What a surprise! I wasn’t expecting any books and suddenly this popped up in my mailbox. Amazing! Looking forward to read it, although it will could be on the “to read” pile for a while because I try to prioritise bookray books.

I got this book from another bookcrosser and it had been on my wishlist for a while, since I saw it popping up on my Goodreads feed quite often.

But I think I’m too old for this book and/or have no interest in the world of fanfiction. I mean, it was an entertaining read and I finished it in just a few days (reading while breastfeeding my newborn definitely helps to get through my TBR pile). So overall I enjoyed the story, but I don’t think I’ll remember this book in a year.

The book covers the life of Cath during her first year in college. She’s a huge fan of Simon Snow (which is basically Harry Potter) and a popular author if Simon Snow fan fiction. While her twin sister explores typical student life by partying and getting (too) drunk, Cath prefers to stay in her room and write.
