A Man Called Ove: A Novel

Delightful and different. Listened via audio, to better hear the pronunciations of the names. Ove is a loner curmudgeon, determined to do away with himself after his wife dies. But he keeps getting thwarted by the neighbors, who arrive at inopportune times, backing over his mailbox when the sign clearly says no driving by the houses, falling off the borrowed ladder, and then leaving Ove to drive the pregnant wife and kids to the hospital, and leaving him in charge of the stray, abandoned cat. Lovely how the neighbors got under his skin, without him really even knowing it, just like his late wife did.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
A wishlist book. Enjoy!
If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it. Then, when you are ready, pass it along for someone else to enjoy! Thanks and happy reading!

Just received this book today. Thanks for sending!
Not the kind of book I usually read, but I liked it. Hope you enjoy it too.
The book arrived safely on this snowy day - thanks so much! It's on the reading list for my monthly book group, so I'll be reading it soon.
Later: I thoroughly enjoyed this book (as did the rest of the book group - though, interestingly enough, the very oldest member, who's 80-something, didn't find it quite as amusing as the rest of us did). The emotional ups and downs, the unfolding layers revealing the personalities and histories of the main characters, the delightfully wacky scenes - and the heart-warming ones, hard-won and well earned...
At first I found Ove's stick-to-the-rules grumpiness a bit offputting, but it soon became clear that his nature was to try and fix things, to do things right, and he just wasn't very patient with others who didn't seem to see things that way. His prickly relationship with his neighbor Rune, the near-mystical appearance of the cat (I loved the cat, but knowing cats as I do I found it a bit too sociable; my take is that it was a kind of genius loci in cat-form), the many ways in which his attempts to end it all were interrupted... it was all wonderful to read. I liked the sometimes-choppy writing style, and I really enjoyed the increasing number of characters whose back-stories enhanced Ove's own. From slapstick scenes about Patrick's clumsiness to wrenching ones about Rune's failing mind to the lovely little sub-plots regarding Adrian, Mirsad and Jimmy, I liked it all - and there were plenty of sniffly bits as well as laugh-out-loud ones. Really enjoyable book!
[The book inspired a 2015 film, which I'd like to see. And there's a TV Tropes page with some entertaining tidbits on both book and film versions.]

OH my gosh Gory, I am SO sorry. I thought I'd journaled this book when you sent it.
This had to be the best read I've had in quite a long time. A story that supposedly made other readers laugh. I just found it a quiet tale about a quiet man who I understood all too well which made me laugh at myself.
There Is a proper way to do things. What's so bad about that? I loved Ove and I loved his story.
