This is the first volume of the series that inspired the 2016 anime, which I've been following on Adult Swim. It's a futuristic world where the mysterious Dimension W has allowed a universal source of cheap power - but there are dark secrets behind it, and our hero Kyouma has devoted himself to living without relying on these "coils" and to recovering any illegal coils in use by others. He stumbles upon a young girl named Mira, who is a very advanced robot, and reluctantly gets drawn in to her own mysterious past.

This volume introduces the main characters, including Albert, a former colleague of Kyouma's, who's working for the energy administration, and Kyouma's boss, a powerful woman who runs a rather shady empire. And then there's "Loser", a mysterious (that word turns up a lot!) masked thief who makes a point of announcing each upcoming theft before he commits it - and then manages to escape, though so far he's never actually stolen the things he claimed he was after. When he and Kyouma face off over some special coils, it seems they might be surprisingly evenly matched...

The back stories of the characters include parallels - skilled loners with tagalong kids and missing beloved spouses, and serious grudges against the New Tesla energy empire and the power of the coils. Where will it go from here?

[There's a TV Tropes page on the series.]
