This is another book I chose to read in my efforts to actively seek out books written by authors who have very different life experiences from mine. This one is set in India at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries, and is framed by two terrorist bombings in Delhi marketplaces. In between, this is an intimate exploration of the impact of these attacks on some of the individuals involved. Because of the focus on the personal stories of these diverse people, Hindu and Muslim alike, this book delves deeply into the ambiguities and complexities that surround the reality of terrorism. Standing in stark contrast to the standard political rhetoric, there is very little black and white here, but a whole range of gray shadings. Here it is possible to understand how the families of the victims might have complex and contradictory reactions to their losses, and we can also come to understand the ways in which educated youth might find themselves becoming ever more radicalized, perhaps to the point of becoming terrorists themselves.

While the book doesn’t even remotely condone terrorism, it does provide a nuanced look at the people who commit terrorists and their lives. They are portrayed as humans, rather than monsters, with lives, families, emotions, and reasons for their actions. Similarly, the victims and their families are removed from the realm of caricature, with portrayals that show us the complexities of living with the grief and trauma inflicted by such attacks. And this is probably the biggest strength of this book is that it humanizes all those who are impacted by such attacks, showing us that they aren’t really all that different from ourselves. Through this story, the reader might come to better understand the complex web that binds these people together, and why easy answers to the questions posed by terrorism are unlikely to be helpful.
