In the first novel of the Union Street Bakery series, Daisy McCrae learns how easily life can turn on a dime…

Suddenly without a job or a boyfriend, Daisy now lives in the attic above her family’s store, the Union Street Bakery, while she learns the business. It doesn’t help that, as the only adopted daughter, her relationship with her sisters has never been easy.

When an elderly customer dies, Daisy is surprised to inherit a journal from the 1850s, written by a slave girl named Susie. As she reads, Daisy learns more about her family—and her own heritage—than she ever dreamed. Haunted by dreams of the young Susie, who beckons Daisy to “find her,” she is compelled to explore the past more deeply.

What she finds are the answers she has longed for her entire life.

I liked this book. One of the category "feel good books".
Easy to read, nice story, makes you want to start baking immediately, made me google
Alexandria, all in all enjoyable!
I would have loved more of the ghost/mystery aspect. That was too marginal for me..
But I do know I will continue reading the sequel ;-)

Very good story about roots and family. And the life who might not be the life you need, as learn Daisy Mc Crae, the heroin of this story. I think I'll read with pleasure the sequel of this book "Sweet Expectations". Now, I attend middle of august and the return of his holidays to send the book to Penelopewanders, in Switzerland.

Decidedly, I keep signing up for bookrings which I think are parts of other series. Again, I thought this was part of the Tradd Street series by Karen White - a building, ghosts... (and the first pages gave me the impression this was yet another slightly OCD heroine)... but no, this is a different book, different city, different series. Initially the writing struck me as somewhat brash, but as this corresponds to the heroine, it stopped irritating me. I ended up enjoying this a lot. It did end on a mini-cliff hanger in the "what now?" sense, so I was relieved to see there's a sequel. Now to get my hands on it... An interesting read with well-described characters. I still don't understand Shaun's anger, but maybe that becomes clearer in the sequel. I'm glad I got a chance to read this. I've got the next address and will try to send soon.

This was an interesting story idea, and the author obviously knows a great deal about the bakery business. The emotions that Daisy, the main character, experienced as a result of being an adult who was adopted as a child, such as rejection, not fitting in, etc., seem very well done.
There is a historical mystery in the mix as well. When an elderly customer passes away, leaving a 150 year old journal to Daisy, she is first dismissive, then intrigued with the bequest. There are more questions than answers at first. But as she and her sister dig ever deeper in to the journal and the history behind it,she discovers insight and answers to many questions that have plagued her through her life.

When the story began, I thought it was a tale about being downsized and returning to your roots. As I was reading this book I had to stop a couple of times and re read a sentence to make sure I had not read it wrong. Aside from that, I liked the idea and premise of the story. I loved the historical mystery and the lovely town setting. I wanted to know more. I want to eat treats from this bakery!
