At an inn in the Berkshire Mountains, seven former schoolmates gather to celebrate a wedding--a reunion that becomes the occasion of astonishing revelations as the friends collectively recall a long-ago night that indelibly marked each of their lives.
The story sees a group of people meeting up again after 20+ years. As ever there is a tragic event in their combined past after which point they went their separate ways. However, after limited contact between members of the group, they reunite for the wedding of Bill & Bridget. To me this is odd...why would you want to see people after all this time anyhow, let alone at such a personal event such as a wedding? Beyond me, but for the purpose of the story it seems to work, mainly because Shreve does create credible people - even if I didn't care for them!
While the historical story of Innes was an interesting diversion (I googled the Halifax disaster after finishing the book - a truly tragic occurrence), I'm not sure what the point of it was other than a parallel to Nora & Harrison (maybe just a page filler) These two stories of a man loving a woman he couldn't have, being separated by decades, then having one night together, I think was meant to be romantic....personally I don't think it's okay to cheat on your spouse however many years you've waited to do it!
A good read which I enjoyed at the time but the more I think about it now, the more I dislike the characters.
