In the familiar setting of Holt, Colorado, home to all of Kent Haruf’s fiction, Addie Moore pays an unexpected visit to a neighbor, Louis Waters. Her husband died years ago, as did his wife, and in such a small town they naturally have known of each other for decades; in fact, Addie was quite fond of Louis’s wife. His daughter lives hours away in Colorado Springs, her son even farther away in Grand Junction, and Addie and Louis have long been living alone in houses now empty of family, the nights so terribly lonely, especially with no one to talk with.

An ok short read although I found the premise of inviting a stranger to share your bed a bit of a stretch and overall being a little too quiet and simplistic for my taste. Going by the many reviews at Good Reads this is a loved final book from this author and I am sure this copy will go on travelling to be enjoyed by others.

Letter box surprise

I see it is on the Wishlist of a generous bookcrosser so I will pop in the mail on Monday. I found this deeply moving and so terribly sad. Who would have thought such a simply written tale could be so deceptively beautiful. I think I enjoyed this far more than the previous reader. An age and stage thing perhaps?

Simple and short, but such an extraordinarily tender and moving story.
