The Evil Seed

When Alice Farrel meets Joe's new girlfriend she is disturbed by the girl's placid nature, not realizing that this is just one side of her persona. Is the lust for power which was true of Rosemary Ashley 40 years before, the same hunger she sees in Ginny?
Having really enjoyed other books by Joanne Harris, I'm sad to say I was disappointed in this, though to be fair, I'm not a fan of vampire novels (unless they're a bit tongue-in-cheek). For me it lacked credibility from the off, not due to the vampire element, no it was the fact that Alice's ex-boyfriend rings her after three years & asks her to put up his new girlfriend .....never mind the fact that Alice agrees - what?!!! I just really struggled to accept that scenario & so I guess the book was never going to engross me after that.
I wasn't enamoured with any of the characters. Ginny's little gang was straight out of "The Lost Boys", from their outfits down to the vampire child, not very original IMHO.
I see in her introduction that Harris says her publishers were wanting the next Anne Rice (one is MORE than enough thank you) well, I for one am glad she didn't continue in this vein...haha......

I generally like Joanne Harris' work, particularly "Blue Eyed Boy" and "Chocolat." This was a fairly average book by her standards. I must admit a lot of the books that I've read about vampires have been a bit clichéd.
"Caution - May contain vampires.
It's never easy to face the fact that a man you once loved passionately has found the girl of his dreams, as Alice discovers when Joe introduces her to his new girlfriend. Then Alice finds an old diary and reads about two men and the mysterious woman who bewitched them both, buried in Grantchester churchyard half a century ago.
As the stories seem to intertwine, Alice comes to realize that her instinctive hatred of Joe's new girlfriend may not just be due to jealousy, as she is plunged into a nightmare world of obsession, revenge, seduction - and blood."
Will be releasing for Halloween Book Exchange

A wish list book for the winner of the International RABCK Sweepstake
Thank you sooo much!
A well read book... though I'm afraid that none of you has liked it so far...
Well, it has finally left the UK, and is here safe with me; looking forward to reading it and giving my opinion.
Thanks for the lovely Xmas card and BC labels... you have been brilliant! :)

Currently reading it, as I intend to send it to the winner (or decoy?) of the latest edition of the Supernatural Sweeps.
Well, I must agree with Plum: the initial premise just feels wrong, and from then on, eveything goes downhill.
A pity, because the idea of intertwined stories (Rosemary in the past, Ginny in the present) was good... But come on, you agree to have your ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend under your roof, and even when she starts behaving strangely and bringing weird friends into your house, you just put up with it? No way...
I found the ending confusing, maybe because I had just lost interest by that point.
Having said this: it is well written, and qualifies as the first effort by a writer who afterwards became better in her craft... The same happened to me with "Sleep, Pale Sister": a good initial idea, getting muddled along the way... Maybe trying to take on too much?
Thanks for sharing; it will soon be on its way to its next reader... :)
