This was a really good book... about a man, written by a woman. But as I am a woman, who knows?! One of my favorite lines is, "Innocence is a slippery substance." Larry is a likeable fool, a nice guy, a little lost and misunderstood. I liked Larry and his penchant for labyrinths mazes and a seemingly ordinary life.

This one is going out on a mini-ray to:

vivdripper - Massachusetts
LeighBCD - UK
CandyFloss - UK

I hope you really enjoy this one!

Thanks for letting me read this. I did enjoy it. Larry IS a guy I went to high school with. I have mentally attached this school friend to Larry's character. This was nicely written, though a little bit slow. I'll always think of Larry when I think of labrinths. I'll be sending this off to LeighBCD in the next few days.

I enjoyed this novel - it is a perfect example of an author who conveys big ideas through small, insignificant events. The idea, I think, AND HERE IS A BIG SPOILER... is that we can search and search for what we want in life and find that we had it, had happiness, all along (hence they symbolism of the mazes). Larry seemed an ordinary, confused man, living his life but not really engaged in it... I enjoyed the book more as it went along. I would like to know what happened to him in the end!!

I will send this book off to the next member of the ray within the next week once I have received address details. Thanks so much lightwavz!!

No word from Candyfloss and as I am about to go away on vacation and move house, I have no choice but to move it on. I am sending this as a RABCK to loopy1 - I have no idea if you have read this or not, but we have shared a number of books in common now so you might enjoy this! I really hope so.

How strange! We watched the postman pass our house this morning, then went out. When we came back there was post through the door and this book on the doorstep!
I couldn't remember signing up for this, so came here to find out where it came from - thanks Leigh, I haven't read this one, or anything else by this author, although I'm sure I've heard her name before. So I'll read this one and then look for a new home for it, unless anyone says otherwise.

Well I have mixed feelings about this book. I got a good quotation from it - "He was a dreamy kid growing up, and after that a dreamy adolescent, just letting life happen to him. It took him years to get himself wide awake, and lately he's been feeling that he's dozing off again, collapsing inward like the shrink-wrapped merchandise on the rack at the front of the store."
But in the end I didn't care enough about the characters to keep reading. I've been finding it hard to settle to reading lately, so it's not just the book, it's me too!
I've had a request for this book from BlossomU, who's kindly sent me a couple of books I wanted, so this book is now off again :-)

Thanks so much loopy 1, it just arrived, my first Carl Shields. I am feeling guilty for having asked it, did not know it was a hardback, if I knew I would have womanfully resisted the temptation to ask for any book. Big thanks in any case!
