This good-condition hardcover is a fictionalized account of the lost Franklin Expedition from the viewpoint of a young crew member. We meet him while he's still living in England, fascinated by accounts of previous Arctic expeditions - and then caught up in criminal activities via a casual friendship with a young mudlark. Eventually young George hears of the new Franklin expedition and convinces his parents to let him go along - but he's surprised to find that his ne'er-do-well mudlark friend Davy is also in the crew.

The book conveys the trials and tribulations of life aboard ship, often difficult even when things are going well. And once the ships are iced in over two consecutive winters, things begin to get very bleak. George and Davy choose different paths when the crew attempts to find a way to escape the ice, but the odds of survival aren't good...

At the end of the book there's a historical note with a summary of facts and speculations, some photographs and paintings, and the author's note explaining where he departed from fact for his story.

This History Blog post describes the identification of the HMS Erebus, one of Franklin's two ships. The discovery of its wreckage in surprisingly good condition was one my favorite history-news stories.
