Purchased USED for $2.00 from the Friends of the Library book sale in Lawton, Oklahoma. I have a paperback copy of this book on my shelf, waiting patiently to be read, so I probably bought this for trade. I'm sure the book will be great and the price was too good to pass up.

Krakauer is an author of rare talent. He lends depth and detail to the story so you feel like you're standing in the middle of the action with a 360-degree view.

Pat Tillman's life is worthy of a book, but Krakauer goes above and beyond by describing the state of our foreign relations during that time, the political unrest in the Middle East, the prevalence of friendly fire accidents in our military, the culture of denial and self-righteousness among top brass, and the unmitigated gall and callousness displayed by Washington as they used the death of a hero to whip up misplaced fervor for the war.

Someone I know called this saga a "conspiracy theory", but I don't think you can be confronted with the abundance of ugly truths here and continue to deny that it wasn't just a tragedy, it was a national embarrassment.

I liked the history of the area as much as the story of Tillman.
