Bought this morning from the St Hilda's fair.

Cape town to Cairo by any means possible.
A week after breaking up with the girl next door - his girlfriend and travelling companion through Central America - Peter Moore heads off to Africa to lose himself for a while. In the grand tradition of 19th-century scoundrels, explorers and romantics, Africa strikes him as the ideal place to find solitude and anonymity in the face of a personal crisis. What follows is Peter's journey from one end of the Dark Continent to the other.

I really enjoyed this easy to read humourous travel book. I loved the little pictures and sayings at the start of each chapter eg "Akili nyingi huindoa maaifa" -"great wit drives away wisdom"
Becuase the author is Australian you get the "downunder" view of the world missing in some of the other travel books I have read. I also took the time to check out the authors website Here and looked at his photos of his journey.
It is nice to read a travel book that visits the "real" Africa and meets the ordinary people both good and bad.
My favourite part of the book would probaby have to be when he was an extra in a German film being shot in Nairobi - the film Nowhere In Africa later won best foreign film at the the Academy Awards.
My husband read it also and agreed with my review.

I loved this book and can't wait to catch up on the pther books that Peter Moore has written. Peter travels from Cape Town to Cairo, gatecrashing a presidential birthday party in Zimbabwe, making an oscar winning film, surviving riots in Addis Ababa as well as meeting loads of interesting people along the way. This book tells it as it - i laughed out load whilst reading the book but it also doesn't shy away from the abject poverty that exists in Africa. Fantastic!

Arrived in the post today and was waiting when I got home from work. After recieving no bookrings for months I've just got three in the past four days!
I've finished one and am starting on the second, this will be next.
Thanks daemonwolf.

Update: June 4th
Just finished this and enjoyed it very much. I don't read many travel books and found this a quick and easy read. Yes I agree he did go on about money a bit and it wasn't really relevant or neccessary, but on the whole I liked his style and would definately read more of his books if they came my way.

Journal Entry 11 by Brujula from Valenciennes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais France on Friday, June 11, 2004
Arrived in my mail today, together with another bookring book! The book has lovely postcards in it. I'll have to look for a nice picture of Belfort and its lion!
I'll start it as soon as I can, probably in a week or so.

Thank you redhouse!

I am glad you are all enjoying this book, just thought I would let you know that I sent an email to the author Peter Moore, telling him about bookcrossing and that I was sending his book on a world tour, with a link to the journal entry. Here is the reply I got from him the other day.

...And thanks for setting Swahili free into the
world. It will be interesting to see where it turns up! It'll probably
be better travelled than me soon.

Cheers

Peter Moore

Easy to read, interesting descriptions of the african countries visited... I kind of like that way of travelling, taking time to stop and enjoy places and people!

It will be ready to mail as soon as I find a nice postcard of this place!

Mailed to ecmwfinswe today. I tried to choose a nice card, but I'm afraid it's rather ugly!

Journal Entry 15 by ecmwfinswe on Friday, July 23, 2004
Now the book has arrived to Sweden. I'm in the middle of another bookring-book but I'll start with this one soon.

Journal Entry 16 by ecmwfinswe on Saturday, September 11, 2004
Now I've travelled through Africa too. It was easy to read and I liked the "down-under" perspective. We do all have our oppinions about each other don't we... Just waiting for the address from tuz.

Journal Entry 17 by ecmwfinswe on Friday, September 17, 2004
The book is posted today.

Dear Peter Moore:

Next time you break up with a GND, can I come with you on your journeys? I have fun, do not mind getting shots, can eat street food without whining, and don't mind dust.

Love,
GfromNJ

Anyway, I love travel stories and found this story to be quite funny. I had never read any Moore before, but I will hunt some down in the future.

Can't wait to add this to my South African book list.

Journal Entry 21 by ruggergirl on Monday, November 1, 2004
Thank you so much for inclusion into the bookray! Although I was really frustrated at times at the constant comparisons to first-world countries, as I've thought about it more I just think this book was really honest. No sugar-coating of the experience, which I admire. I'll be sending this on to cait017 soon.

This book unfortunately seems to stalled with the previous participant who is apparently MIA -I do hope she is okay as there has been no answer to pm's or movement on her bookshelf for several months.
Luckily the wonderful Fleebo from Australia has stepped into the breach and provided this replacement copy .
Thanks Fleebo!!
A revised list of participants will be added to the above book soon, as the new copy is a bookring rather than a bookray.
