This has arrived with me very quickly, thank you very much! As I said on the forum thread, it's my book club read for May, so I will wait till then to read it if that's OK.

Set in the Dark Ages, where people live in small communities and there are still strange beasts like ogres and pixies. The country is affected by a strange mist which causes people to forget, a clever plot device meaning that the characters can explore their own memories at the same time as the reader does. An old couple, Axl and Beatrice, go on a journey to visit their son, picking up companions on the way: the Saxon warrior Wistan, the boy Edwin who must flee his village, and the aged Sir Gawain, charged by King Arthur to slay the dragon Querig. A very unusual and compelling story.

This is my first encounter with Kazuo Ishiguro’s written, even though I have been warmly recommended his work previously. And I must say that my friends were right, this book was beautiful.

He gives us here a gentle and melancholic story about memory, love and forgiveness. The story unfolds slowly toward a beautiful and poignant end, and still lingers in my mind.

How wonderful a lovely book all the way from China in record time - quicker than I can get a book to the other end of the UK using the British Post Office!! Amazed.

As this is such a favoured author with me, I can see that the incentives to read it out of step (I'm in course of reading a trilogy which is on a ring to The Netherlands next) are piling up fast. Dilema ~ but of the nicest kind.

Journal Entry 11 by Flutterbies9 at Meare, Somerset United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 14, 2016
Sorry for the delay but this is now all read, packaged up and ready to go in the post tomorrow.

As I had read others by the author I thought I knew what to expect. However, with this book, I was wrong. This is different to the previous books I've read and quite an unusual concept. It left me feeling very sad and not really knowing why. As expected the writing was very emotive and full of symbolic meanings throughout - which is one of the reasons why I've taken so long to get to this stage. The mystical aspects were very convenient to the plot and lent the 'onion peeling' aspects of the prose a layer of authenticity.

I'm not so sure that I'd be enthusiastic to read any more by this author if it had been my first book by Kazuo Ishiguro, but for the record, I did enjoy this strange excursion into part fantasy that the book took and the main characters of Axl/Beatrice, Wistan/Edwin and Gawain all interacted so well with secrets unfolding only when required.

I loved this book, it is almost Shakespearian and has a mystical atmosphere from the beginning to the end. It made me wonder what the life must have been like during the dark ages and then the fantastical elements of the story just made it very special. Important themes of humanity, love, courage, sacrifice and morals were prominent. Highly recommended!

I'm currently recovering from a foot operation so the next reader will have to wait a week at least before I can get this to post, sorry about the delay.

The book has arrived safely with me!

Journal Entry 16 by Clairby11xxx at Farnborough, Hampshire United Kingdom on Friday, January 13, 2017
"There's a journey we must go on, and no more delay ..."

I'm still not really sure what the journey actually was to be honest. The plot, in it's most literal sense, is about an elderly couple called Beatrice and Axl and their journey to find their son. Alongside that there is some Arthurian legend, ogres, Saxons, strange monks and a dragon, that all sounds quite exciting but somehow I found myself struggling to muster the enthusiasm to open the book and keep reading.

It's a very hard book to review because so much of it is "literary fiction" and the meaning and symbolism was just lost on me, I knew there was something there I wasn't grasping and I've finished the book with no more clarity than when I started. The best way I can describe it is like wandering through someone else's dream where the small meanings are so personal that you don't notice them and the story makes no sense and keeps jumping around aimlessly.

Received this morning thanks for sending. I have a couple of other books I need to read first but will get to this as soon as possible!

Journal Entry 19 by wingSparkishwing at Fleckney, Leicestershire United Kingdom on Monday, March 13, 2017
Enjoyed reading this, I loved the writing style and story and thought there were some interesting observations regarding memory, ageing and the fear of being alone. Some touching moments between Axl and Beatrice but I found the use of the pet name grated quickly. However, as much as I enjoyed this, the ending left me vaguely dissatisfied but I can't quite put my finger on the reason for this.

Thanks for sharing Lamilla, this will be on its way to the next participant tomorrow
