The Vampire Files, Volume Two

This volume is a collection of three of Elrod's novels: Art in the Blood, Fire in the Blood and Blood on the Water. I've been enjoying this series, and these stories were excellent mysteries. There was more continuity here, with a reoccurring villain who seems like he might almost be a match for our vampire hero. I hope we'll see more of Angela in future books, she seems like a fun foil for Jack.
We also start to see the consequences of Jack's liberal use of his powers, as he tries to learn how to better control them and discovers some of his limits. He is also starting to avoid Bobbi shortly after she became more actively involved in both the supernatural and investigative aspects of his life, uncomfortable with the path his powers have been pushing him towards, which I can see backfiring spectacularly for him in upcoming books. She's not someone he wants for an enemy!

This book is one of the starting novels in the newest round of The Vampire Bookbox
I'm claiming this from the Vampire bookbox. I enjoyed other books in the series, and couldn't resist this three-volume omnibus.
Later: More entertaining adventures with Jack and Escott, more complications with Bobbi (hint: getting involved with a private eye is bad enough, but when he's a vampire too, complications *will* ensue), and plenty of action. The author takes full advantage of Jack's near-immortality by putting him through near-death experiences at every turn, culminating with the final scenes of Blood on the Water - and while Jack got out of that via what serves as a deus ex machina, more or less, I was still almost as glad to see Escott find him as he was {wry grin}.
The author does pay homage to the many downsides of being a vampire, from the ongoing temptation to drain too much blood to the ways in which it seems to attract unwanted attention from other beings, supernatural or not.
[There's a TV Tropes page on the series with some entertaining tidbits.]
