Thank you so much for this lovely RABCK, Lamilla. I do enjoy Winterson. I read "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit" soon after it was released back in the 80s, and am looking forward to this one.

Where Winterson's debut, a tragic-comic tale of a young girl who is adopted by Pentecostal missionaries in Accrington, offered us a semi-fictionalised version of her childhood, her latest describes the reality. And what a hellish reality it was. Winterson's story is one of abandonment, loneliness, madness and defiance. It is both inspiring and appalling, its cruellest details only made digestible by the restrained elegance of Winterson's prose.
The Independent, Fiona Sturges (Nov 6, 2011)
The front cover blurb on my copy of the book says "Brave, funny, heartbreaking", and there are possibly no better three words to describe it, apart from 'stunning' or 'brilliant'.
Anything I attempt to write as a review just cannot do this book justice. It filled in the gaps from "Oranges", it explains much as the background of Winterson's recurring themes of love, loss, risk and time, and it makes me feel I 'know' her better as a person rather than as a writer. The book is so much more than a retelling of her life, and covers many topics in an intelligent and thoughtful way. It made me think, and at times brought me close to tears. It's gutsy, searingly honest, harsh and also tender. Winterson's bravery, wit, and above all her determination to use literature and language as the tools of her own salvation are inspirational. Winterson herself is a brilliant wordsmith and I admit I am an avid fan. Her writing brings the book to life.
Just read it.
Now reserved for sofie777 as a choice from the OZ VBB.
Currently waiting for its travelling companion.

Off to a new home. Enjoy!
Thankyou Crimson-Tide, I had read Óranges Are Not the Only Fruit' and remember that I had really enjoyed it so looking forward to reading this book by the same author.
Really couldn't put this book down. To read so honestly her upbringing and how it formed the person she has become, harrowing at times but shows how powerful we are as humankind overcoming adversity.
