Glass, Paper, Beans

I got this good-condition hardcover from Better World Books, another "biography of things". This one's got an interesting twist: it opens with the author sitting in a cafe with a glass mug of coffee and a newspaper, musing - poetically - on the surroundings and on the special mood that may strike one sometimes when contentedly settled. And then she delves into the origins of the coffee beans, the glass, and the paper, through a mix of historical and scientific background and biographical looks at three different people, each working in an industry that prepares one of the three substances. She follows them through their daily work: a lumberjack in Canada, a shift-supervisor at Anchor Hocking Glass in Ohio, and a man whose family has tended coffee trees in Mexico for generations. Stories and musings, self-reflection and intereviews - the book's a very unusual mix, reminding us in a small way of the many hands involved in creating everything we touch...
I'm adding this book to the Biographies of Things bookbox, which will be on its way to its next stop soon. Hope someone enjoys it!
