I came across this fair-condition softcover at a local thrift shop, and decided to give it a try. Looks like a light-hearted vampire/romance of sorts.

Later: Well, I don't know how "light-hearted" it actually is - it opens with the heroine's memories of the slaughter of her dearest friends by the Vatican vampire-hunters, and of her summoning of the goddess Lilith to take vengeance. And there's more blood and threats and torments of various kinds - but the main story is set in the modern day, and when our heroine Garnet is not angsting over her past or fretting over how hard it is to control Lilith, she's trying on a fetching Goth outfit and chatting with her fluffy Maine Coon cat. (The cat's her familiar, and between covens and vampires and shape-shifters she has her plate full of the supernatural even in ordinary life.)

While the setup seemed OK, somehow it didn't grab me, and I found myself skimming to see what would happen next. Even the arrival of the most powerful foes and most sympathetic and troubled potential-love-interests didn't really hook me - but perhaps someone else will enjoy it!

This book rode to the end of the line in the Vampire Bookbox.

The plot here is thin, and not all that interesting. I didn't really like the writing style, which is very chatty and stereotypically chick-lit-esq, and the characters were fairly stock, although I did find some of them pretty fun. Yet somehow I finished this book easily. Despite the drama, it is a light, easy-to-read book and made a good palate cleanser between more serious books. I also read a large chunk of it while training with a very fearful dog at work, so having a story I wasn't heavily invested in worked well for frequent interruptions.

I think the other element that made me stick with this novel was that I enjoyed aspects of the world Hallaway created and her supernatural societies. I thought she did a nice job incorporating mythical aspects that we rarely see in urban fantasy and developing how they would interact with human society. It was a bit disappointing not to get see more of the psychological effects of some of the plot events, which were obviously traumatic for Garnet. I was left wondering if they were trimmed out to make this book fit better with the expected feel of the paranormal romance genre.
