1 journaler for this copy...
I found this fair-condition paperback at a local thrift shop, and nabbed it for another release copy.
Sometimes when I'm reading one of Lansdale's novels or short stories, I find myself wondering whether I keep on reading is to prove to myself that I'm tough enough to take it {wry grin}. This book, like the others, has a lot of bad things happening to good people (and to bad people too, and to people whose characters are as complex as real-life people so it can be hard to put 'em on one side or the other), and sometimes the suspense of knowing that another Bad Thing is coming just... well, gets to me.
If you don't cope well with gruesome scenes of threats, violence, cruelty, and/or racism (overt or veiled), this is not the series for you. I appreciate the deft writing, the humor, the surprisingly varied characters, and the rather twisted plots, not to mention the enduring friendship between unlikely pals Hap and Leonard, and I usually find it worthwhile to have waded through the bloodshed. That's the case with this one, though I must say that it's more lyrically melancholy than some of the other books - an odd turn given how the story opened. Lansdale's just not like anybody else!

Other Hap and Leonard books I've read:
Savage Season
Bad Chili
Rumble Tumble
