Jane Austen's most 'grown up' novel. Instead of a novel of manners, with the characters slowly realizing that their behavior should inform their manners, rather than the easier reverse course, this novel deals with Emma Woodhouse who is so far above local society, that she never really has worried about her manners. She was above it. Slowly, she comes to realize that blindly accepting your own superiority may not be the best course. Of course there are absurd situations, and a happy ending. It is Austen after all.
