Major Ernest Pettigrew is perfectly content to lead a quiet life in the sleepy village of Edgecombe St Mary, away from the meddling of the locals and his overbearing son. But when his brother dies, the Major finds himself seeking companionship with the village shopkeeper, Mrs Ali. Drawn together by a love of books and the loss of their partners, they are soon forced to contend with irate relatives and gossiping villagers. The perfect gentleman, but the most unlikely hero, the Major must ask himself what matters most: family obligation, tradition or love? Funny, comforting and heart-warming, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand proves that sometimes, against all odds, life does give you a second chance.

I stumbled upon the Major because of his name! Having recently read 'Miss Pettigrew lives for a day' (and seen the movie more than once ;-)) I just had to see whether the name lives up to another charming story.
And I have to say - it does!
All set in a very traditional English village with people who are living traditional lives - might be a stereotype but that's how a lot of people imagine the English country folk. (meant in an absolutely positive way!) - cosy cottage and afternoon tea all inclusive.
I liked the Major a lot, his way of living (ok, could have done without the hunting..), his way of talking - and the troubles he had to overcome when finding out that Mrs Ali is more than the shop keeper to him..

Of course one has to drink a cup of tea while reading *lol*

This arrived while I was on holiday.... so hopefully, with work starting up tomorrow, I'll be able to get to it soon. At least it doesn't seem there are too many people after me champing at their bits and stamping their feet for it - yet! Thanks so much for sending, hope you had some holiday time too!

This came to me as a somewhat truncated ring - I think it's just me and then home again?
I am trying to analyse why at times I found this difficult to read. Maybe, as my husband and I approach retirement age with great strides, much of the Major's dithering and yearning for old values and clarity hit a bit close to home. Partly too, his reticence to stand up for his beliefs out of a sort of back-handed courtesy and disinclination to ruffle anyone's feathers, made me want to scream (quietly, without disturbing anyone else, of course ;) ). Roger was yet another who had me gnashing my teeth. Fortunately the Major gradually found his backbone, thanks to the wonderful Mrs. Ali. At the end of the day I did enjoy this and was very glad to have read it.
Shall I send it back to you now Kiki66?
