Called to a woman's refuge to take a routine witness statement, DI Marnie Rome instead walks in on an attempted murder.
Trying to uncover the truth from layers of secrets, Marnie finds herself confronting her own demons.
Because she, of all people, knows that it can be those closest to us we should fear the most . . .

There's two storylines running here both featuring domestic violence. DI Marnie Rome goes to a Womens Refuge with the intent of trying to get a young woman, Ayana, to give evidence against her abusive & violent brothers. However, on arrival, Marnie & her DS, Noah Jake, find themselves walking in on what could be an attempted murder - refuge inmate Hope has stabbed her husband Leo. Or is it self defence? How did Leo find Hope? Who had the knife? Trying to establish what happened proves difficult for Marnie & Jake as the other witnesses, the women living at the refuge, prove unreliable......but thats all I'm saying as am wary of spoilers!

Marnie might not be a wholly original character, lets face it lots of literary detectives have had a tragic past or are hiding secrets (& it strikes me that she might have a lot of to reveal) but shes one I want to hear more from. I'm particularly keen to learn more about her relationship with Stephen - how can she visit the murderer of her parents? More to the point, feel sympathy for him? I'm guessing that things here aren't going to be straightforward either....

All-in-all a good read & I look forward to reading the next in the series :o

A good read about an issue that until recently wasn't really taken seriously by the authorities and especially the fact that males can be victims of domestic violence too. A complicated case for Marnie who has problems of her own but she gets there in the end with the help of her loyal team.
