Angela´s Ashes

"In the extraordinary memoir that has won the praise of critics and the hearts of readers, Frank McCourt recounts the heartbreak and humor of his astonishingly poor childhood. Goergeously written from the innocent perspective of young Frank, this is a memoir more dramatic, suspenseful and mesmerizing than most novels."

Chosen from the Shrinking VBB. Thanks very much Bookworm-lady!
McCourt's horrific memoir of his dreadful childhood in Ireland, with alcoholic father, a full quota of strange relatives/neighbours, appalling living conditions and the consequent distressing childhood illnesses. This is entertainingly described and well-written, so I can see why it won the Pulitzer Prize. Somehow I failed to make an emotional connection to the story though, perhaps because the reader knows all along that McCourt is now successful and living in New York.

I "enjoyed" Angela's Ashes a lot. It is a book describing a very hard childhood, but somehow the author manages to retain the perspective of his 2 or 5 or 15 years' old self along the narration and to include sparks of humor and a tragicomic effect that makes his text flowing and much lighter that you'd think.
As a side note I always question the accuracy of memoirs. Authors usually trim some corners or alternate events to make reading more interesting or pleasant or poignant and even when they don't lie or say half truths intentionally, still I don't think they can narrate/recall the facts down to the last iota...
After all how can one remember everything since the year he was born? He just describes incidences coming down through other people's memories or family jokes or what imagination is now part of his own concience as fact.
Still I think that Frank McCourt did a great job here and I feel he didn't stray much from reality. I'm intrigued to check his next books now and find out how his life turned after the end of the book...
Thanks once again for sharing!
