This is the first volume of a sequel to the Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle series, which wrapped up with Volume 28. It's intertwined with xxxHolic Rei, a sequel to the xxxHolic series, and as those all did, includes crossover appearances from actual or lookalike characters from other CLAMP works - including the new-ish Gate 7.

While I'm glad to see my favorite characters again, and to find Fai and Kurogane bickering contentedly with each other and with Mokona, while Syaroan tries to be the more sensible core of the group, I'm not quite sure those long and tangled series needed sequels - but I did have to check this one out anyway! And it does seem that the gang is off on another set of adventures, in Nirai Kanai, of which it is said that "the souls of the living come from Nirai Kanai and the souls of the dead return to Nirai Kanai". So does this mean that our heroes are bound for the - or at least *an* - afterworld?

As always, the lush artwork is a delight, especially on the chapter-heading pages. Fai is paired with Sakon (expy of Sakura from Gate 7) on chapter 3, and Kurogane with Ukon (expy of Tachibana, also from Gate 7) on chapter 5; these pairings are stunning, and highlight the way in which fair-haired, smiling Fai and tall, fair, smiling Sakon are the counterparts of dark, grumpy Kurogane and dark, moody Ukon. (All of the above have hidden depths, of course - and we don't know that Sakon and Ukon or their princess are, in this universe, anything like their counterparts from Gate 7.)

While Sakura herself had to remain behind in her own world and is not traveling with the guys, we do get to see what she's up to in one chapter, where she offers prayers for her friends - and chats with the priest Yukito, though we don't get to see her brother Touya this time around.

The translation notes provide info on many things, including the crossover characters and some of the plot-points.

[There's a TV Tropes page on the original series, with mentions of the new one.]
