Another World Book Night 2012 book I found at the Goodwill. (And I paid full price too!).

Dana and her husband are moving into their new home in California when Dana disappears in front of Kevin's eyes. This is the start of a a time-travelling, history exploring, heart probing tale of a 20th century black woman who keeps getting pulled back to the early 1800s onto a slave owning farm.

Butler has been a hero to me for a long time. I have never read this book before, sticking to her future tales. Wow, I'm sorry I missed it all these years. Dana's human experience of confronting what slavery was, did, and how it still lays a shadow in America is very worthwhile. I didn't find anything surprising here, but instead found a beautifully told subtle exploration of what it means to be human in an impossible situation.
