This was Hanff's first book, and while I did enjoy it, I found that it did not have quite the same panache as some of her later and more well-known work, such as Q's Legacy and 84, Charing Cross Road.
This book is about Hannf's experiences as a struggling playwright during Broadway's heyday. It also includes quite a bit of material regarding her friendship with the actress Maxine Stuart. Good, interesting material that is well-written--but it is an unstructured series of reminiscences that haven't really been shaped into a narrative arc as in some of her other books.
Bottom line... fans of Hanff will enjoy this book, but it is probably not the best place to start if you are new to Hanff's writing. Start with 84, Charing Cross Road! You won't regret it!
