For me, this memoir didn't live up to the rave reviews it received. I found it somewhat disjointed, and also somehow lacking in emotional depth. It was interesting material, but not particularly interestingly told. And some of the parts of McBride's mother's life that interested me the most were not drawn in much detail. I'm not sorry that I read it, but it didn't have as much resonance for me as I had hoped.
