no recollection of buying this, but it's on my shelf! Probably part of a charity shop buy for reading and releasing.
quite a 'stream of consciousness' style of writing, but a very clever book about a young waiter in mid 20th century Prague. His ambitions see him rise from bus boy to serving the Emperor of Ethiopia, but his marriage to a German nurse sees him dragged into the politics of Nazi occupied Europe. He makes - and quickly loses - his fortune in the post war years, as Czechoslovakia turns Communist. A challenging read in places, apparently the Czechs say that this writer is 'untranslatable' and I can see why!
