A rather interesting read! There was a lot of good stuff about his growing up in Texas, the disappearance of the Old West, cattle ranching and how his ancestors settled there.
Interspersed in with all this was plenty of stuff about books he'd read and his take on the writing of certain authors.
I particularly enjoyed the section about the antiquarian book business, and the art of hunting for books - it reminded me of when I lived in Topeka, KS, working in a bookstore, not to mention my own forays into various used bookstores, and made me want to seek out some places I haven't been to in a long time, such as a few stores in Iowa City's Old Capitol area. He spent a bit of time making comparisons between writers, booksellers, and book hunters.
Of course, I knew he'd written Lonesome Dove, but didn't know about some of the other stuff he'd written, such as The Last Picture Show. I'd recently heard his son, James, singing on Mountain Stage awhile back, and had sought out his music; toward the end of the book, Larry mentions his son's being a songwriter.
He also impressed me with the admission that he knew early on he wasn't cut out for the cattle business, yet wound up writing about it a bit, noting that his description of scenery in some of his works was helped by his experiences around family members who were more suited to ranching than him.

plan to wild release or RABCK soon.....
