Ever since I learned that the marvelous 1947 noir film Out of the Past was based on a novel, I've wanted a chance to read it. Finally tracked down this slightly-battered UK-edition softcover for a reasonable price!

The novel's plot does vary a bit from the film's (especially at the end), and some characters from the book were combined for the film, but the novel is well worth reading. Its spare writing and mood-setting is very effective, and it tantalizes the reader with the hope that its damaged protagonist will be able to re-invent himself and have a happy life. But the past intrudes - and oh, does it ever... Vicious rivals, high-tension dialogue, a femme fatale, and more!

I left this book in the Little Free Library at around 3:15 or so; hope the finder enjoys it!
