Journal Entry 1 by goatgrrl from New Westminster, British Columbia Canada on Monday, February 23, 2004

This book reminds me of Katherine Govier's Random Descent, since both stories involve a Canadian woman trying to come to grips with her family's neuroses by learning more about the ancestors that preceded them. Unfortunately, whereas I loved Random Descent, Graven Images is driving me nuts. The novel reads suspiciously like non-fiction (particularly knowing just a few details of the author's biography), a trip scrapbook compiled of a jumble of notes, quotes, remembered fragments of campfire songs, Shakespeare plays and dreams (dreams! Ack!). The all-over-the-placeness gets irritating after a while, and reading this book is a little like not being able to sleep at night, lying there in the dark listening to the chaotic rattle of your own mind. Reviewer Elisabeth Harvor seems to share my perspective - you can read her review of this book here. I hope whomever finds this book will enjoy it more than I did!

Journal Entry 2 by goatgrrl at Starbucks 6th and Columbia in New Westminster, British Columbia Canada on Saturday, March 13, 2004
Release planned for Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Starbucks 6th and Columbia in New Westminster, British Columbia Canada. Okay - I wasn't a big fan of this book, although it got marginally better near the end (the main character's relationship with her mother was touching and familiar, and made me feel slightly more sympathetic in relation to the whole story). But this is a wild release in the truest sense -- I have no idea whether the person who finds this book will read it, nor whether if they read it, they will enjoy it. Fingers crossed.
