Ellen Foster is an 11 year old who has had some very hard knocks. Growing up with an abusive father in a backwoods shanty in the south, her mother commits suicide/is murdered (we, and Ellen, aren't quite sure of which), repudiated by the rest of her relatives, she finally arranges a safe haven.

2008 Challenged in Tx 'profanity' (source ACLU report 2008-9 on Texas)
listed as an example of a banned book for 'sexual abuse' by the President of the Association of Library Services to Children, a division of the ALA. (source "Does Censorship Matter?" by Pat Scales)
