Since croyd first recommended this book to me in 2011, John Scalzi has become one of my favorite SF authors.
The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce--and aliens willing to fight for them are common. The universe, it turns out, is a hostile place.
Here are some of the awards won by author John Scalzi:
• Hugo Award — for SF/F works, voted by members of annual World Science Fiction Convention
• Geffen Award — for SF works in Hebrew, voted by members of annual Israeli SF/F convention
• John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer — for new SF/F writer, voted by members of annual World SF con
• Kurd Lasswitz Preis — for SF works published in Germany, juried
• Seiun Award — for SF/F works published in Japan, voted by members of annual Japanese SF Con

I'm so glad you've found this book!
Won't you please make a journal entry to let the book's previous readers know that it's safely in your hands? How did you find it? What did you think of it? What are you going to do with it next?
It's now your book, for you to do with as you please: keep it, pass it to a friend, or maybe even leave it where someone else can find it!
If you've ever wondered where your books go after they leave your hands, join BookCrossing and you may find out: you'll be able to follow the further adventures of your books as new readers make journal entries - sometimes from surprisingly far-flung locations.
(Think of it like Where's George for books...or a little like geocaching - you can follow the book's journey every time someone makes a new entry. Some BookCrossers even leave books *in* geocaches!)
BookCrossing: making the whole world a library!

Wow thank you! What a nice surprise!
I have never read anything from this author but found the story interesting when it was recommended to me. Look forward to a good read.

With his wife gone and not much else to look forward to, John Perry volunteered to be the defense force fighting to protect the colonies on planets far from Earth.
An amazing story, enjoy it more than I expected. Reminds me of Ender's Game, in which children fight in war with aliens. This is somewhat the opposite idea, where older people with their experience are treasured. Though not necessarily their bodies. A lot has happened in this book, I was surprised how the author manages to wrap things up somewhat satisfactorily, while dangling enough for readers to pick up the next book in the series.
