Thank you so much for generous box of books for my elderly aunt - bookcrossers are the best ;-)
Journal Entry 5 by kingfan30 at Somewhere in Lincs 🤷♂️, Lincolnshire United Kingdom on Friday, January 29, 2016
Book has come back to me after a visit to my aunt. She asked about this stickers in the front of the book, so I told her all about Bookcrossing and the lovely people who had been so generous :-)
11 Sept 16 - I have to admit that any title with horse in gets my attention straight away (still a child at heart!). At the start I wasn't sure about the book, Catherine comes across pretty irritating and doesn't seem to give a lot of thought to anyone else. But once she made her selfish decision to leave and become a nurse, things got a bit more interesting. The introduction of Florence Nightingale threw me a bit, but I soon got my head round it. The description of life in the Crimea hospital were pretty awful, I dont know that much about that war to know how factually correct it was, but it was certainly an eye opener. Ultimately it is a love story though, that was quite a quick read.

Many, many thanks for sending me this RABCK book! I'm looking forward to reading it and I'll ensure it continues to travel after I've read it :)
Catherine Carreg has grown up a tomboy, spending her days racing her ponies with Deio, the drover's son, in a small Welsh village. But Catherine is consumed by a longing to escape the monotony of village life and, with Deio's help, runs away to London.
Alone in the unfamiliar bustle of the city, Catherine finds a position in a rest home for sick governesses in Harley Street, run by Miss Florence Nightingale. Then, as the nation is gripped by reports of the war in the Crimea, Catherine volunteers as a nurse - and her life changes beyond all recognition.
Arriving in Scutari, she is pitched into a living nightmare and, against the passion and heroism of one of the most traumatic wars in history, she is forced to grow up quickly and painfully, and learn the hardest lessons of love and war.
My thoughts
This book is on my Loughborough Unconvention NSS partner's Bookcrossing wishlist so I'm reading it and passing it on in the NSS parcel. Absolutely loving the book and it drew me in really quickly. I liked the descriptions of bustling London in the mid 1850s and I could imagine the horrors of nursing during the Crimean War, and it's very interesting to read a fictional book that features Florence Nightingale. Not sure how much of the stuff about her is real or fiction but it's fascinating stuff. I have about 70 pages left to read so I'm aiming to finish it in the next day or so and then pack it up for my NSS partner to enjoy after me. I'm looking forward to reading more by Julia Gregson now and I'd defnitely recommend.
