Rec'd when my Horror/Supernatural Bookbox arrived home. Like the sound of it, through it will probably have to sit on my TBR mountain a while :o)

Never read any Richard Laymon before - what??? I know hard to believe as I consider myself a horror fan - & as it turns out this isn't really my idea of a horror tale. That isn't to say I didn't like it though. The actual Show doesn't really feature until a good 340 pages into a 440 page book. The earlier part is more of a "coming-of-age" type tale featuring three teenagers, Dwight, Rusty & Slim. I liked Dwight well-enough & Slim was certainly a more rounded character than girls often are in these books so I found this enjoyable reading despite the lack of horror.

The trio did seem very gauche at times for sixteen/seventeen year olds but then it was supposed to be 1963. The passages about Dwight & Slim being alone - & there seemed to be far too many of them - I could have easily done without. I don't need to be constantly reminded of the urges of hormonal boys thank you very much or have umpteen descriptions of Slim's frayed shorts! Things didn't improve much with the addition of Bitsy to the group. This character was a mess, a thirteen year-old who seemed to fluctuate between being a potential Lolita & having the temper tantrums of a four year old.

So by the time the Travelling Vampire Show actually featured my interest had started to wane. As to this section, mmmm...pretty much as expected going by other parts of the book ie just an attempt to titillate. The final chapter & its "explanation" was a total cop out.

Overall, not a bad read as I really enjoyed the first half but it wasn't my sort of horror novel.
