Journal Entry 1 by carlissa from Miami, Florida USA on Friday, February 20, 2004
Just finished listening to this book. This book is more than just a travelogue - it's a hilarious story of 2 men hiking the Appalachian Trail, mixed with lots of information of the environment and terrain of the Appalachians. I will be sending this audio book on a short audio book relay on March 1, 2004.

Journal Entry 3 by cytronella from Plantersville, Texas USA on Friday, March 19, 2004
This is the second time I've listened to this book, and it's enjoyable again, as I'd hoped! I loved Bryson's observations on Mary Ann (is that the right second name? I can't recall now . . . *sigh* Darn short term memory!) I papraphrase, because I couldn't get to paper fast enough to quote: "I have long known that part of G-d's plan for me was that I spend time with all of the stupidest people on Earth." Totally fun . . . and now ready to send on to lilmztaz on April fools day! I'll change the status (from reserved to traveling) when I mail it off! Thanks for organizing this audio relay ring, carlissa! A side question about the audible.com products, though . . . this is the first audible.com audio I've ever listened to, and I found the fluctuating volume very frustrating . . . is that common to the downloads they offer? The end of the cd's fade out (to give credit, the next cd always backtracks a sentance or two, so nothing is missed), and sometimes in the middle, suddenly it would get loud or quiet.

I'm not sure I could do this hike (too wimpy) so it was good to hear the descriptions from someone who has done the hike. It was fascinating!

I thought this was a great listen! Funny and interesting at the same time. I didn't think the audio was that bad, it just had a tin canny sound, but kind of fun, like he's telling you the story over the phone. Otherwise, there was nothing I missed because of the sound quality. It does fade out at the end of each CD, but that portion is always repeated at the beginning of the next one. I enjoyed it!

This was a great book to listen to. Interesting walk, interesting people, interesting facts about the trail and other environmental issues. Bryson certainly didn't make the hike sound like fun, but he really made me wish I could try something like that once. I've done short 1-day hikes in Yellowstone and Washington, and I've always wondered about trying something a little more challenging. (I definitely wouldn't go for weeks or months at a time -- I'm not THAT delusional or ambitious!) Listening to this Bryson book on audio makes me want to listen to his other books instead of reading them. Thanks for passing it along!
