This is one of sixteen books brought to my husband from my generous neighbor on Atlantic Avenue as a donation to the Little Free Library of Twinbrook (#7720). Thank you so much!
I read this book a while ago. This is what I wrote about it after I read it:
SPOILER ALERT: The story is of the absurdity of secularism versus fundamental Islam seen through the eyes of the poet Ka visiting his hometown of Kars in Turkey during a snowstorm! Ka returns to retrieve the beautiful Ipec, the divorced wife of his religious school friend Muhtar, and make her his wife. His cover story is that he is a journalist who is visiting Kars to cover the elections and the suicides of young women. He is really a poet who took political asylum in Germany. So now he returns to Kars where he becomes involved with the two daughters of the hotel owner Turget Bey, his beloved Ipec and her sister Kadife, the girl-friend of Blue, the most extreme Islamist. During the story, we learn that Ka is shot and killed 4 years after returning to Germany. We know his green book of poems is missing. By now, we know that Ipec never really loved Kars, and had once been Blue’s ex-girlfriend. Kadife is to be in a play where she is to bare her head, although Blue, who was allowed to escape from captivity of the government, does not want her to do so.
I love the way snow, a natural phenomenon, is a prominent thread throughout the novel as well as Ka’s source of inspiration.
