I like adaptations, but the original story actually isn't that good. Read it to make up your own mind. The engrained idea that all women want to look after other people and want to be mothers is just irritating.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

The ultimate children's adventure novel. Much loved and much adapted. Delivering early to the meetup venue due to other commitments.

I read this as a child (I think) but am interested to see what I make of it as an adult.

Well, I thought I knew this, but it is certainly interesting to re-read as an adult! I had forgotten the sheer inventiveness of the story, and the sexual politics turn out not to be something added for the Walt Disney film, but a full-blown part of the original. In one sense they thoroughly date the book - I can't imagine that many little girls now would be content, as Wendy is, with being a mother to the Lost Boys, and the mutual jealousy of Wendy, Tiger Lily and Tinker Bell is very grating - but on the other hand the idea that women are the serious adults, and men all selfish little boys is one that I didn't think went this far back - yet here it is. And Peter is charming - but totally self-obsessed, for which Barrie does not spare him. The ending, where he comes back and finds Wendy grown-up - and then turns round and goes off with her daughter - is very poignant. So, if you thought you knew this, it might just be worth another look!

Picked up at the January 2016 BC Meetup in York.

I didn't read this when I was young (and avoided the film like the plague) - but it's never too late! Last year, for example, I read another classic of children's literature 'Tom's Midnight Garden' for the first time ever - and was blown away by it (it was one of my favourite reads of the year!) - so there's always a chance that this might do the same. If not, then at least I'll know what any cultural references to it are all about!
