This book is a little different than the one pictured here. It's a discarded library hardcover that I purchased at a used book store.

One of my favorite books is The Brief History of the Dead, by Kevin Brockmeier, so I am really looking forward to reading this.

I actually read this last month but forgot to journal it. Here's my review:

I'll start by saying I absolutely loved Brockmeier's novel, The Brief History of the Dead. He's got such a unique writing style.

I read The Illumination over too long a period of time, and then reread it in a couple days. This book is beautifully written but it's the kind of book I had to read thoughtfully with no distractions, in order to fully appreciate it.

My favorite line: "She died a few moments after the sun touched her skin". This is his description of the death of a minor character being pulled from rubble. I pictured this vividly and the scene was both terrible and beautiful to me. I can't get that line out of my head.

The best thing about this book is that 6 characters, leading completely different lives from each other, interconnect in that they all come in contact with the same diary. The way we find out how the diary is passed along is usually done in a very subtle manner, so you kind of get a lot of those "oh wow" moments while you're reading this book. I thought it was brilliantly done.

I would have liked a different kind of ending, which is the only reason I didn't rate this book a 10. Next Brockmeier book I plan to read: The Truth About Celia.

Given to me by time-traveler. Thanks I'll pass it on!

As much as I liked this book, I don't know how many people I would recommend it to. If you like stories that tie up neatly and logically, this probably isn't for you. If you prefer something more subtle, almost like trying to remember a dream you had, or like a painting perhaps, I'd say give this book a try. Beautiful writing through out.
