Lily has grown believing she accidentally killed her mother when she was just four years old. Now, at fourteen, she yearns for forgiveness and a mother´s love. Living on a peach farm in South Carolina with her harsh and unyielding father, she has only friend. Rosaleen, a black servant.
When racial tension explodes one summer afternoon, and Rosaleen is arrested and beaten, Lily is compelled to act. Fugitives from justice, the pair follow a trail left by the woman who died 10 years before. Finding sanctuary in the home of three beekeeping sister, Lily starts a journey as much about her understanding of the world, as about the mystery surrounding her mother.

Journal Entry 3 by BOOKWORMINUSALL at Mesa, Arizona USA on Tuesday, May 23, 2017
This book arrived safely yesterday afternoon, in spite of the envelope having a 4" opening torn into the back of the paper portion of the envelope. Using a padded envelope for its travel from Iceland was a wise choice, as the bubble wrap kept the package in tack. ; ) I have been trying for several days to decide which of the books I have started were what I needed to get back to reading. I was finding none quite what my soul wished to be reading until I picked this one up and opened it this morning. I had decided I would check in here at Bookcrossing to make a Journal Entry after I watered a few things in the garden before it got too hot outside. We are in triple degree weather again now, and have had a roller-coaster of inclement weather all year that has been very unkind for successful gardening. Only the most resilient plants are still managing to hang on. As I was watering, I watched a little cutter bee collecting tiny parcels of leaves from my Cinco de Mayo Rose again this morning. I planted it in memory of several "Mothers" who have long since passed from my life. The cutter bees make absolute "lace" of the leaves each season. Not the prettiest sight for roses, but it is how the bees survive and I have grown accustomed to it. At any rate, once finished outside, I picked up this book and started reading it as I walked down the hall. In that short walk, I found the fist paragraph of the first chapter relaying a moment when the character was watching bees. I was immediately connected to this book that I have heard of many times, yet never had the opportunity to read...until now. ; ) THANK YOU so much for allowing me to participate in your "Spring Cleaning", Bjorg...I SHALL enjoy!!! ; )

UPDATE 6/14/2017

I have always wanted to read this book, so when I noticed it was part of Bjorg's Spring Cleaning RABCK, I was thrilled to have been chosen to receive it. THANK YOU AGAIN, Bjorg!!! ; ) It's one of the best books I've read in a long time. I finished reading it over Memorial Day Weekend for Katethegreyt's May Readathon (May 26-June 2) http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum/6/542200/8937506. It was so well written that I was literally not able to put it down. Bees are an endangered and disappearing creature that are essential to our own well-being and existence. They are vital to our food chain and not only pollinate our fruits and vegetables, but also foraging crops for many of the animal proteins many people consume, in addition to the cows that produce dairy products of all kinds...and the list goes on. This story embodies the important roll bees play in our existence, wrapped up in a coming of age story set during the year of the historic Civil Rights Act, and paints a picture of how they became the integral ingredient for the healing many of the characters in the story needed to become whole and have a future. I have decided to put this one into erishkigal's 2017 WILD THING Bookbox so it can continue its Journey of hope and healing for others to enjoy. Happy Reading!!! : )

Picked this out of the "wild things" book box. I thought I had read this book, but it must have been a different "bees" themed book, now that I look at the storyline. Looking forward to it!
