Read it on Christmas Eve and Day. Certainly a lot different than other Hardy novels.
It captures a point in time, pre-Industrial Revolution in England, when people and their lives were limited to their local villages and region.
It's a boy-meets-girl, they fall in love, suffer the usual tribulations of other suitors and disapproving families and finally triumph in marriage.
Hardy does a wonderful job with character development, although the older language will have you going to Google for definitions of strange words--tranter, Japanning, for example.
Overall, a nice break from modern fiction and a quick read. Recommended for those with a love for English rural stories...
