This is a satirical spoof based on Shakespeare's Othello: The Moor of Venice, The Merchant of Venice, and King Lear; and Edgar Allen Poe's The Cask of Amontillado. I've never read any of the Shakespeare, and although I think I read the Edgar Allen Poe story it has been a long time, so I only got the basic connection and missed the nuances. So basically, I didn't understand or enjoy the story as a stand-alone but I assume that if I knew the stories it was spoofing I would have enjoyed it more. And of course the Shylock the Jew stuff, even though spoofed in this book, made me unhappy to some extent. I might be the only reader who found it only halfway funny and was yawning and checking my watch, figuratively. It is funny if you find a lot of "wanking", "big swinging dongs" and "fuckin' French" funny. OK, I did giggle a few times.

Thanks for this selection from the Lit VBB. I've read several Moore books and usually enjoy them. Hope to get to this one soonish along with some others I have on my TBR shelf.
