This is an abridged-for-younger-readers version of Kipling's stories, and while I generally recommend that people go with the original, this version might be a good introduction. It includes some illustrations, and a Q&A at the end. (I'm using my autumn-foliage bookplate on this one in honor of the fact that Kipling wrote the book while living - not in the jungle, but in Vermont!)
I've loved the Jungle Book stories about Mowgli and his friends almost since I can remember; in fact I think it was the first book I read all the way through and then started back at the beginning again (this would have been at about age 8). I wanted to go hang out with Kaa and Bagheera - heck, sometimes I still want that {wry grin}.
The language in the original book is beautiful, the jungle imagery wondrous (though often suitably harsh), and Mowgli a compelling hero. This adaptation simplifies a lot of that lush language, and removes some of the grislier plot-points; again, I recommend the original, but this gentler version might appeal more to some readers.
[There's a TV Tropes page for The Jungle Book; very entertaining, though if you haven't read the book yet, do beware of spoilers.]
