This wishlist book arrived safely today; many thanks! I've wanted to read this one for some time, and am curious to see how it compares to other food-related manga such as Oishinbo or What Did You Eat Yesterday?.
This is an entertaining mix of serious love-of-bread food-porn and wildly silly drama, following the adventures of bread-obsessed Kazuma, who apparently has the "hands of the sun" - unusually warm hands that can help give yeast-doughs an extra boost in making bread rise. (I did wonder how these hands helped him in making croissants, as that kind of baking requires *cool* working surfaces, but hey, it's a story.)
This volume focuses on Kazuma's childhood introduction to the wonders of bread vs. rice, via a local baker who - having imparted his dreams to Kazuma - promptly leaves town to go to Tokyo and pursue his own future. I suspect Kazuma will run into him again someday.
When he gets to be 16, Kazuma goes to the city himself, to participate in a contest to see which of dozens of candidates will get the single job-opening at the most prestigious bakery in Japan. During the contest Kazuma makes a friend, meets a rival, wins him over (more or less - he's still feeling competitive, just isn't quite as willing to throw Kazuma under the bus in order to win), impresses the hell out of everyone in the contest - but for his own reasons opts out at the last minute and winds up getting a consolation-prize job elsewhere. Along with his new friend and his former rival!
The descriptions of different kinds of breads are lush, and the recipe details informative. The scenes in which people taste Kazuma's creations and go into wild raptures, sometimes even into fantasy "imagine spots", reminded me of Drops of God, which does the same thing for wine-tasting. This book does it in a much goofier manner, though, and keeps things on the side of "silly" vs. "serious".
By the end of this volume, our heroes have met their current boss, who it seems prefers the judgement of his favorite horse as to the quality of bread; not sure where *that* came from, as it's even noted in-story that giving horses too much grain can be bad for them. So, keyword "goofy" wins for this series so far!

I love to bake and this book was just perfect I'm hoping to send it to my friend in portigal
It was a very enjoyable book with great comedy. I'm not sure who I'm going to give it to yet, but I hope to get it out of New Hampshire. Maybe I'll ask my friend in Alabama if I can send it to him. If he says no, perhaps I'll send it to Massachusetts.
